Tikamgarh, a city in Madhya Pradesh, takes its name from a fort that became the capital of the Orchha kingdom in 1783, when the royal seat shifted here from Orchha — itself founded in the 16th century by the Bundeli chief Rudra Pratap Singh. The district is also home to Garh Kundar, an old fort built by the Khangar rulers, who held it as their capital from 1180 to 1347. The city was formerly known as Tehri, meaning triangle, after the three hamlets that originally formed it.
