Known as "the Door of the Amazonia," Tingo María sits at the confluence of the Monzón and Huallaga rivers in central Peru's Huánuco Region, with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants along the waterfront. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Bella Durmiente — a limestone mountain range whose silhouette resembles a sleeping woman — and the nearby national park shelters the Cueva de las Lechuzas, a cave colony of Oilbirds considered among Peru's most accessible. Coffee and cacao are cultivated across the Huallaga River valley.
