Topola, in central Serbia's Šumadija District, is known for its annual Oplenac vintage festival and the vineyards surrounding it, as well as for its role in the First Serbian Uprising: Karađorđe was chosen here as the uprising's leader against the Ottoman Empire in 1804. The St. George Church serves as the burial place of the Serbian and Yugoslav royal family, the Karađorđevićes.
