Tórshavn
Faroe Islands
The capital of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn sits on the water with mountains rising close behind, and carries a café and restaurant scene that punches well above its size. The Norse established a parliament on the Tinganes peninsula here in AD 850, making it one of northern Europe's oldest continuously functioning capitals, and the trade monopoly that once made it the sole legal marketplace for the islands was abolished only in 1856.
