Reachable only by boat or plane, Tortuguero sits on a sandbar between the Caribbean Sea and the Tortuguero River on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast. The village — whose name translates as "Land of Turtles" — borders Tortuguero National Park, where navigable rainforest canals have earned the area the nickname "Central America's Amazon." The park's beaches are key nesting sites for four sea turtle species, and the wider ecosystem supports jaguars, four species of monkeys, and abundant birdlife. Four biological research stations operate nearby, focused on conservation.
