Tshikapa, the capital of DR Congo's Kasaï Province, sits at the confluence of the Tshikapa and Kasai rivers, close to the Angolan border. Founded in the early 20th century by a Belgian-American mining consortium that discovered diamonds nearby, the city has been shaped by diamond mining ever since, with the industry remaining its primary economic driver. It gained official city status in 2003.
