Tunja
Tunja · Colombia
Founded in 1539 by captain Gonzalo Suárez Rendón on the site of the Muisca settlement of Hunza, Tunja is the highest departmental capital in Colombia, set high in the Andes northeast of Bogotá. Its walkable historic centre holds an exceptional concentration of colonial religious architecture, along with pre-Columbian Muisca sites including the Hunzahúa Well and Goranchacha Temple. The city also hosts internationally known events such as the Festival Internacional de la Cultura de Boyacá and serves as a base for visiting Villa de Leyva and the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy.
