Uji, a city on the southern edge of Kyoto in Japan, is known for its high-quality tea production and two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Byōdō-in Buddhist temple and Ujigami Shinto Shrine. The city sits along the Uji River, which flows from Lake Biwa, and its historic centre developed along the riverbanks. The eastern half of the city rises into hilly terrain, and Uji lies roughly between the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara.
