A wine-producing town on the banks of the Orange River in South Africa's Northern Cape, Upington is the main gateway to Augrabies Falls and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Founded in 1873 on the site of a mission station, it is best known for its export-quality grapes, raisins, and wines grown on the river's fertile flood plains. The original mission station now houses the Kalahari Orange Museum, which includes a donkey statue commemorating the animal's role in the region's 19th-century development.
