Uzgen
Kyrgyzstan
One of Kyrgyzstan's oldest towns, Uzgen traces continuous settlement to the 2nd–1st centuries BCE and appears in Arab and Persian sources from the 9th and 10th centuries, when it ranked as the fourth-largest city in the Fergana Valley. From the late 11th century through the 13th, it served as the capital of the Fergana district under the Karakhanid state, a period when scholars born here took the epithet "al-Uzjendi." The town retains architectural monuments from this era, set against a mountain backdrop with water nearby.
