Užpaliai

Lithuania

Straddling the Šventoji River in northern Utena County, Užpaliai is a little Lithuanian town with a linen-working heritage and a cluster of historic landmarks on both banks. The 1898 Holy Trinity Catholic church and the 1872 Orthodox church of St. Nicholas stand near the centre, alongside a 1930 bridge, a water mill, and remnants of a 19th-century manor complex. Two local museums cover regional history and historic carriages and harnesses, and natural features include a spring, a conglomerate outcrop, and two ancient hillforts nearby.
