Founded by a group of Mexican repatriates from the United States, Valle Hermoso holds a recognized place in Mexican history as the country's first repatriated community, a status acknowledged by the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores. This town in northeastern Tamaulipas, bordering the municipalities of Matamoros and Río Bravo, was part of what became Mexico's most important agricultural centre in 1939. The compact centre has a walkable concentration of cafés and restaurants, and water is within easy reach.
