Varniai, a compact city in western Lithuania's Telšiai County, sits on the Varnelė river and holds an unusual concentration of religious heritage for its size. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1691, is the oldest in Samogitia and served as a cathedral; a wooden church from 1804 stands nearby. The former seminary houses the Samogitian Bishopric Museum, and a house where Bishop Motiejus Valančius lived between 1850 and 1864 survives as a historic monument.
