Varnsdorf
Czechia
A small industrial town on the Mandau River in the Lusatian Highlands, Varnsdorf sits on Czechia's northern border with Germany, surrounded by mountain terrain on three sides. Once nicknamed "the Little Manchester of Czech Netherlands" for its textile and engineering industries, it hosted the first complete liturgical performance of Beethoven's Missa solemnis in 1830. The wider region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites, and border crossings into Germany make it a practical base for exploring the area.
