One of the oldest towns in western Belarus, Vawkavysk sits at the confluence of the Ros and Vawkawyya rivers in Grodno Region and traces its founding to 1005, when it served as a fortified settlement on the border between Baltic and Slavic peoples. By the 12th century it had become the centre of a pocket-sized princedom, and the Hypatian Chronicle records it by 1252.
