Vendel
Sweden
Vendel, a village in Uppland's Tierp Municipality, lends its name to the Vendel Period — an era of Scandinavian prehistory defined by the remarkable archaeological finds made here. The site was once a royal estate within Uppsala öd, a network of properties that funded Sweden's medieval kings. Vendel Church, begun in Romanesque style in the latter half of the 13th century and given brick vaults around 1450, is noted for its 15th-century murals by Johannes Iwan. The village sits beside Vendelsjön, a long inland lake near the Vendel river.
