Vervins
Aisne · France
The Peace of Vervins, which ended the war between France and Spain, was signed in this modest Aisne town in 1598 — giving it an outsized place in European diplomatic history. A Roman theatre excavated in the 1870s points to an even earlier past, with the settlement recorded as Verbinum in a 3rd-century itinerary. For its size, Vervins has a reasonable spread of cafés and restaurants, and sits between two small streams draining toward the Serre.
