On the right bank of the Paraná River, at a bend where the channel narrows, Vuelta de Obligado is the site of the Battle of 20 November 1845, in which Argentine forces under General Lucio Norberto Mansilla — appointed by Governor Juan Manuel de Rosas — fought an Anglo-French squadron seeking direct trade access to the interior provinces without passing through Buenos Aires. The site today falls within the town of Obligado, in San Pedro district, Buenos Aires province.
