Książ Castle, the largest castle in Lower Silesia and the third-largest in Poland, anchors this industrial city in the Sudeten foothills of southwestern Poland. Once a major coal-mining centre, Wałbrzych survived World War II largely intact and retains a substantial stock of historical architecture. The city sits in the Wałbrzych Mountains near the Czech border, with scenic viewpoints across the surrounding uplands. In 2015 it drew international attention during the search for an allegedly buried Nazi gold train, which was never found.
