Washington
Wilkes County · United States
This compact Georgia city, often called Washington-Wilkes to distinguish it from its many namesakes, holds an outsized place in American history: it served briefly as the state capital during the Revolutionary War under the name Heard's Fort, and later hosted the meeting at which the Confederacy voted to dissolve itself, effectively ending the Civil War. The town has a notable concentration of historic churches for its size and some listed heritage architecture nearby.
