Waterford
Ireland
Founded by Vikings in 914, Waterford is Ireland's oldest city, sitting at the head of Waterford Harbour in the south-east of the country. Reginald's Tower, a 13th- or 14th-century fortification named after the city's founder, is the oldest surviving Viking monument in Ireland still bearing a Norse name. The city earned the Latin motto Urbs Intacta Manet — "The Untaken City" — after repelling a 15th-century siege. Waterford Crystal, produced here since 1783, remains the city's best-known export; a visitor centre in the Viking Quarter resumed production after the original factory closed in 2009.
