Wawel
Poland
Wawel Hill in Kraków holds the most historically significant site in Poland: a fortified royal complex on the Vistula River where Polish monarchs were crowned and buried for centuries. The Wawel Royal Castle, established by King Casimir III the Great in the 14th century, spans medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture around a Polish Renaissance courtyard. The cathedral and castle together were among the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. The castle museum holds Poland's largest collection of Ottoman tents and the Sigismund II Augustus tapestry collection.
