Whakarewarewa is a geothermal area in Rotorua, on New Zealand's North Island, where Māori have lived continuously since around 1325, using the valley's heat for cooking and warmth. The site holds some 500 hot springs and at least 65 geyser vents, of which seven are currently active. Pōhutu Geyser erupts roughly every hour, reaching heights of up to 30 metres. The area's full name — Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao — translates as "the gathering place for the war parties of Wahiao."
