Winburg

South Africa

Winburg, proclaimed in 1837, is the oldest town in the Free State province of South Africa and one of the oldest settlements north of the Orange River. Founded by Voortrekkers in 1836, it served as the first capital of the Free State and takes its name from a victory — either over the Matabele or in a legal dispute over the town's location, depending on the account. Today it functions as a grain and wool centre, sitting at the junction of the N1 and N5 national routes.
