This town in the northeast Netherlands with a walkable centre well stocked with cafés and restaurants, Winschoten serves as the main shopping hub for the Oldambt region and draws cross-border shoppers from nearby Germany. Three windmills and several churches dot the town, which has held city rights since 1825 and sits within the province of Groningen, with direct rail connections to Groningen city and across the border to Germany.
