Wonsan

North Korea

Wonsan is a port city on North Korea's eastern coast, on the Sea of Japan, that has been designated for development as a summer resort destination — a plan backed by Kim Jong Un, who spent part of his childhood there. The port opened in 1880 under Japanese pressure, and the city is also home to what the Korean sources identify as the Korean Peninsula's first modern educational institution, founded in 1883. It now functions as both a commercial port and a naval base.
