Wonthaggi
Australia
A former coal-mining town on Victoria's Bass Coast, Wonthaggi has a café and restaurant scene that punches above its weight for a modest town. The State Coal Mine, operational from 1910 to 1968, is now a Parks Victoria tourist attraction with its own café. Nearby, the Bass Coast Rail Trail — Victoria's only coastal rail trail — runs from the mine whistle tower through to Anderson, while beaches at Cape Paterson and the Bunurong Marine National Park offer swimming, snorkelling, and fishing along the coast.
