Wupperthal
South Africa
Founded in 1830 by German missionaries of the Rhenish Missionary Society, Wupperthal is a small historic settlement in a valley of the Cederberg mountains in South Africa's Western Cape, still operating as a Moravian mission station today. The town sits near the Cederberg Wilderness Nature Reserve. A fire in 2018 destroyed much of the settlement, including its colonial-era buildings. Johann Gottlieb Leipoldt, one of the founding missionaries, was the grandfather of the South African poet C. Louis Leipoldt.
