A Saxon town on the river Mulde, east of Leipzig, Wurzen has been recorded since 961 and carries a notable medieval core: a 12th-century cathedral that gained its status when the bishops of Meissen moved their residence here in the late 15th century, and a former bishop's castle later repurposed as law courts. The town is also the birthplace of the German poet Joachim Ringelnatz, a fact locals mark with the informal nickname Ringelnatzstadt.
