Yangzhou

Jiangsu Province · China

Designated a UNESCO "Creative City of Gastronomy" for its Huaiyang cuisine tradition, Yangzhou is a large historic city on the north bank of the Yangtze in central Jiangsu Province. Its Grand Canal section and the Slender West Lake were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2014. One of imperial China's wealthiest cities, it built its prosperity through salt and grain transport, and the culture that emerged — distinctive gardens, cuisine, and bathhouse traditions — remains central to the city today.
