Yarkhoto
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region · China
Built on a leaf-shaped plateau between two deep river valleys, Yarkhoto — also known as the Jiaohe ruins — is the remains of a city founded before the 2nd century BCE that served as the capital of the Jushi kingdom and later as a Silk Road administrative centre. Carved from rammed earth using techniques that left walls standing to this day, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 as part of the Silk Road: Chang'an–Tianshan Corridor, and sits a short distance west of Turpan in Xinjiang.
