Once the imperial capital of the Western Xia (Tangut) dynasty from 1038 to 1227, Yinchuan is now the large capital city of China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, sitting on the Yellow River plain with the Helan Mountains to the west. Landmarks within the city include the Yuhuang Pavilion, the Drum Tower, and the South Gate Mosque, while the Helan Mountain rock carvings, Western Xia imperial tombs, and Baisikouˈs twin pagodas lie nearby. The city also hosts the biennial China–Arab States Expo and anchors a growing wine region along the eastern slopes of the Helan Mountains.
