Youssoufia
Province de Youssoufia · Morocco
Founded in 1931 around phosphate deposits discovered two years earlier by French geologist Louis Gentil — whose name the town carried until independence — Youssoufia is a mid-sized Moroccan city in the Marrakesh-Safi region built on mining. It accounts for a substantial share of Morocco's total phosphate output and sits within reach of both the mountains and the coast. During the French colonial period it was nicknamed "the Paris of Morocco" for its economic and intellectual activity; after independence it was renamed in honour of the Alaoui sultan Moulay Youssef.
