Zacatecoluca, the departmental capital of La Paz in El Salvador, sits close to the coast with mountains visible on the horizon. The town traces its origins to pre-Hispanic times and rose to become the second most important settlement in the San Vicente district during the Spanish colonial period, receiving the formal title of city in 1844. It is the birthplace of José Simeón Cañas, a celebrated Central American independence figure.
