Zemun
Serbia
A former independent town on the right bank of the Danube, Zemun is now part of Belgrade yet retains a distinct character, with a dense café and restaurant scene along the riverfront and scenic viewpoints over the water. Long contested between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires, it became a Habsburg military commune in 1749 and was absorbed into Belgrade only in 1934. The Danube is within easy walking distance throughout the old town centre.
