Zharkent

Zharkent's 19th-century mosque, commissioned by the merchant and community leader Vali Bay, blends Chinese and Central Asian architectural styles — a legacy of the period when this southeastern Kazakhstan town briefly fell under Qing administration. Founded in 1882 near the Usek River and close to the Chinese border, Zharkent serves as the administrative centre of Panfilov District and was itself renamed Panfilov between 1942 and 1991, after the Soviet general Ivan Panfilov, who died during the 1941 Battle of Moscow.
