Zvolen
Slovakia
This walkable central Slovak town at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, Zvolen has a café-filled historic centre anchored by an ancient castle. Mountains rise on three sides — Poľana to the east, Kremnické vrchy to the west, Javorie and Štiavnické vrchy to the south — and the wider region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites. One of Slovakia's oldest towns, it was a medieval county seat and remains an important rail hub in the country's centre.
