Aanjar, a pocket-sized village in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the ruins of an 8th-century Umayyad palace built by Caliph Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, abandoned not long after and preserved ever since. The modern village was founded in 1939 by Armenian refugees from Turkey, and its neighbourhood names still reflect the villages they left behind. Vineyards surround the area, and a handful of cafés and restaurants serve visitors to the ruins.
