Ajdir served as the capital of the Republic of the Rif from 1922 to 1926 under Abd el-Krim, and is the birthplace of that independence leader. This little Moroccan town near Al Hoceima sits in the Rif mountains above the Mediterranean, in the territory of the Ait Waryagher tribe. Its Safeeha beach draws visitors partly for its views of Nakour Island just offshore.
