Alajärvi, the only town in the Järviseutu sub-region of Southern Ostrobothnia, sits on the shore of the lake that shares its name and is known as the home municipality of architect Alvar Aalto. Aalto's influence is visible in the town's youth association building and municipal library, and he drew up a town centre plan in the 1960s. The Nelimarkka Museum, dedicated to painter Eero Nelimarkka, adds a second cultural draw to this small Finnish lakeside town.
