The regional capital of South Ostrobothnia in western Finland, Seinäjoki is best known for a civic centre designed entirely by Alvar Aalto — including the Lakeuden Risti Church, city hall, and main library — and for hosting major annual events such as the Tangomarkkinat festival and Provinssi. The city sits along the River Seinäjoki and grew from iron and gunpowder factories founded in 1798, becoming a city in 1960.
