Alife
Caserta · Italy
Onion cultivation has defined Alife since Roman times, earning this small Campanian town the national nickname "city of the onion" and sustaining its economy for centuries through export. Set in the Volturno valley in the Province of Caserta, Alife holds a bishopric documented from at least 499 AD — now joined with the neighbouring diocese of Caiazzo — and sits within reach of the Matese mountain community. The comune was historically home to Arbëreshë and Jewish communities, both since assimilated.
