Venafro
Isernia · Italy
Venafro is a small Molise town with ancient roots stretching back to the Samnite people, who fought Rome here during the Samnite Wars of the 3rd century BC. Its fortified historic centre climbs a mountain ridge, anchored at the top by the Castello Pandone and laid out on a Roman street grid with strong Neapolitan Baroque architectural influence. The Cathedral, following Norman-Lombard tradition, stands outside the town walls. Other points of interest include a French military war cemetery and the convent of San Nicandro, which became a sanctuary after a visit by Padre Pio in the early 20th century.
