Arta's medieval stone bridge over the Arachthos River — the subject of a well-known Greek folk poem — is the most recognisable landmark of this northwestern Greek town, which served in antiquity as the capital of ancient Epirus under the name Ambracia. Its Byzantine heritage survives in a concentration of historic churches, including the Panagia Paregoretissa, built around 1290 by Despot Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas, alongside a well-preserved 13th-century castle. The walkable centre sits on the Arachthos and has a lively café and restaurant scene.
