Known as "Norway's oldest capital," Avaldsnes is a little village on the Karmsundet strait in Rogaland where Harald Fairhair — who unified Norway into a single kingdom — made his primary residence. The medieval Avaldsnes Church and the ancient trading port of Notow mark it as one of the country's more significant sites of early history, set along the northeastern shore of the island of Karmøy, just south of Haugesund.
