Boma served as the capital of the Congo Free State and Belgian Congo from 1886 until the 1920s, making it one of the most historically significant cities on the Congo River. This port city in the DRC's Kongo Central Province sits on the river's right bank, close to the Angolan border, with the Atlantic not far downstream. Its working port still handles exports of tropical timber, bananas, cocoa, and palm products.
