Matadi
Congo - Kinshasa
Founded in 1886 on the left bank of the Congo River, Matadi is the DR Congo's chief seaport and the capital of Kongo Central province, sitting where the river becomes impassable due to rapids upstream. The city lies roughly midway between the Atlantic coast and Kinshasa, close to the Angolan border, with a centre that holds a concentration of historic churches. Mountains rise nearby, and the riverside setting defines much of the city's character.
