Latvia's only Portland cement and roofing slate factory, built between 1936 and 1938 and now operated by SCHWENK Zement, anchors this tiny town in the Courland region, situated along the river Ciecere near a lake whose limestone deposits feed the plant. Brocēni sits on the A9 road and the Riga–Liepāja railway, a short distance from the regional centre of Saldus.
