Sabile
Kurzeme · Latvia
Sabile's Wine Hill, once registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the most northern open-air vineyard in the world, has anchored a winemaking tradition in this little Latvian town since the 16th century. The hill was restored in 1936 and overlooks the Abava River valley, as does the Sabile Castle Mound, a district centre from the 10th to the 13th century. The town itself was first mentioned in 1253 and served as a Livonian Order castle site from the 14th to the 16th century.
