Valdemarpils
Kurzeme · Latvia
Valdemārpils, a tiny town in Latvia's Kurzeme region, carries two notable birthright connections: Krišjānis Valdemārs, a leader of the First Latvian National Awakening, was born in the nearby Valdgale parish and is commemorated here with a memorial stone, while Jewish bibliographer and book collector Ephraim Deinard was born in the town itself in 1846. The town's name, changed from Sasmaka in 1926, honours Valdemārs directly.
